Athium Midland Combination Premier Division
Brocton 5 Nuneaton Griff 0
Brocton bounced back from their mid week exit from the JWHunt Cup at the hands of Black Country Rangers to chalk up another impressive home win in the Athium Midland Combination Premier Division.
A Sam Bell run and quick cross on 5 minutes may have been intercepted by the alert Sam Slater in goal for Nuneaton Griff, just ahead of Sam Hollingsworth’s foot, but it was a pointer to what was ahead. Slater’s positioning was spot on moments later when Gary Fife andBellcombined but Slater denied them.
On 10 minutes Griff showed that they were not there just to defend when Andy Bourne was crowded out in midfield and Griff broke with the ball. The lively Ryan Slinn was sent on a run on the right and Andy Chandler had to quickly cover across to smother the danger.
A five man passing move on the quarter hour started with Richard Jones; involvedChandler, Matt Skinner, Jamie Evans and finally Hollingsworth and once again only the alert Slater prevented a fine goal. Then Andy Bourne picked a cracker of a cross from the right, missing out two defenders and presentingFifewith a great heading chance. Once again Slater foiled the attempt. The respite was short though asBellgot to the right bye line and pulled back the perfect cross forFifeto side foot into the net.
Dan Lomas, working hard in midfield, was then adjudged to have fouled and from the resulting free kick Griff got the ball into the box and had a decent shot blocked on the line.
ThenBellwas off again. This time his cross from the bye line went behind bothFifeand Hollingsworth and Dave Harvey, backing up, could only lift his shot over the bar. However a few minutes laterBell’s pass inside was well anticipated and Griff broke quickly and only a good save from Adam Whitehouse kept the Badgers ahead.
Hollingsworth gave Brocton a cushion on the half hour when aFifepass over the heads of the back line was accompanied by a perfectly judged run. Hollingsworth made himself time and space and had only Slater to beat. The keeper did all he could, but whilst he had his angles right and forced the shot to hit the post, Hollingsworth collected the rebound and tapped home.
Griff worked chances for themselves early in the second period, with Jones intercepting the ball during one dangerous looking attack andChandlerpoking the ball for a corner at full stretch in another and it was a break from defence that set the Badgers up for their 3rd goal. Fife found space on the right andBellgot free in the box for his cross. He simply picked his spot. Another fine goal from Hollingsworth, after good work between Fife andBelland then another fromFife, following Joe Pickering’s efforts to win the ball, completed the 5-0 win
