Stafford Rangers 5 Stocksbridge Park Steels 1

Rangers-5--ParkSteels-1

Rangers were unchanged from the side that beat Marine last time out with Chris Morris making his home debut. Lowly Steels started the brighter when a snapshot from Brian Cusworth forced Danny Read into an early save. It was 18 minutes before Rangers made any impression, Morris sending Jon Sheldon clear and his shot comfortably saved by Ben Scott. Rangers took the lead in the 30th minute. A long ball from Kevin Street saw Morris give centre backs Richard Haigh and Brett Lovell five yards start, nip in between them and hit a left-footed shot underneath Scott and into the net. Haigh almost equalised just before the break but his far post volley was cleared off the line by Ryan Dicker.

Rangers made a substitution at the break with Chris Morris dashing off to attend the birth of his first child, Rob Stevenson taking his place. Rangers doubled their lead on the hour mark. A long clearance from Read found Sheldon on the left. The winger cut inside and then out and his cross was deflected in off Lovell. Rangers third followed 8 minutes later when Sheldon’s free-kick to the near post was bundled home by Neville Thompson. Read was forced into an excellent save on 75 minutes when Lovell’s goalbound volley was turned onto the crossbar by Rangers in form keeper. Steels grabbed a lifeline with 11 minutes remaining when Scott Hogan shot went in off the post following a poor clearance from Thompson. Rangers grabbed a fourth goal on the stroke of 90 minutes when Stevenson’s low cross found Thompson who dinked the ball over Scott despite being marked by two Steels defenders. The icing on the cake was applied by Stevenson three minutes into added time when he latched on to Luke George’s through ball and placed the ball past Scott.
